why does no one ever talk about what fire actually is like it’s not a solid, liquid or gas, it’s just kinda there

this is one of the things that have mindfucked me since forever
like what is it

SCIENCE SIDE OF TUMBLR WE SUMMON THEE!

we asked all of our science teachers through high school and not a single one knew

It’s a plasma

fire is caused by rapid oxidization. visible flames are composed mainly of gasses and tiny solid particles which lend the flame color through black body radiation (also dependent on temperature) and various other characteristics. other light emitted by the flame is caused by photons released by excited molecules in the gasses.

under certain circumstances, if the flame is hot enough to ionize the gass, fire can have plasma in it, but not usually.

in conclusion: it is mainly gas with some solids and under extreme circumstances can contain plasma
